Pair of Oil on Canvas - Swans %26 Egrets - Signed %26 Dated 1898

SOLD

Code: 11579

Pair of paintings one depicting swans seemingly signed 'Lel Pope, 98', one depicting Egrets seemingly signed 'A Pope 1898'. Oils on canvas in a moderate modernish frame would both benefit from re framing.

Possibly by Alexander Pope Jnr (1849-1924) an American sporting artist who painted both these subjects. Alexander Pope Jr. was born in 1849 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to a lumber family. He grew up working with his father, and taught himself how to carve wood. Pope briefly studied painting and technique with Boston artists William Copley and Walter Rimmer, but was mostly self-taught. Pope began his career as a wood carver, sculptor, and painter, depicting game birds, hunting dogs, and other animals. Pope is best known for his trompe l’oeil still life depictions, which create an illusion of depth in a two dimensional work. He is credited with popularizing the tromp l’oeil style in American art. Pope’s work is featured in many prominent collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the White House.
