watercolour heightened with touches of bodycolour, signed lower left, 61 x 76 cm (24 x 30 ins), period gilt frame, glazed, with printed label of Alfred Stiles %26 Sons Ltd., Picture Frame Makers and Gilders, 37 %26 39 Brook Green Road, Hammersmith, London W.6 to verso.

William Hubert Coop, was born at Olney, Buckinghamshire on 8 March 1872, son of Revd Thomas Coop (1840-1897), an independent minister, and his second wife, Martha Elizabeth née Brown (1850-1941), who married at Olney in 1869. Hubert was educated at Birmingham and in 1881 he, and his elder brother Edward and younger brother Charles, were boarders at a school kept by David Purdon at 9 George Street, Wolverhampton. In 1891, Thomas, now a manager for a life insurance company, and his wife were living at 1 The Mount, Gladstone Road, Aston, Birmingham, where William Hubert was a 19 year old draughtsman. After a short period in business, Hubert went on to study at the Lincoln School of Art, where he obtained a First Class Degree in Design. Landscape and coastal painter, and in 1895, was living at Birmingham and elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1897. He married at Saffron Walden, Essex in 1897, Margaret Winifred Barton (31 August 1874-1952) and in 1901, a 29 year old artist living at Prevwylfa, Conway, Wales with his 25 year old wife. He painted mainly in North Wales and in the West Country and exhibited at Birmingham Royal Society of British Artists (24), Fine Arts Society (4), Walker Gallery, Liverpool (39), Royal Academy (19), Royal Cambrian Society (8) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (4), from Birmingham, Conway in 1899, Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1912 and Bideford, Devon in 1920. In 1911, a 39 year old artist painter living at 280 London Road South, Lowestoft, Suffolk with his 35 year old wife Winifred, when using just his second name of Hubert, and where he continued to paint coastal scenes and windmills around Southwold and up the coast into the Norfolk Broads. He then resided in St Ives, Huntingdonshire for a short period, before taking up residence in Kettering, Northamptonshire and his 1918 entry to the Royal Academy has his address at Newland Street, Kettering. By 1927 he had moved to Goats Hill, Northam, Bideford, Devon, where he remained for the rest of his life. Hubert died at Goats Hill, Northam, Devon on 14 January 1953, aged 80.
