Pierre Jules Mene (1810-1879) A superb pair of patinated bronze groups of dogs. One of a Greyhound and a Whippet playing with a ball on a persian carpet. The other of a Greyhound and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel standing on a patinated carpet with a fan lying on the carpet between them. Both with incised signatures to the bases 'P.J.Mene'. Both mounted on Italian Marmoro Portoro Negro marble bases.

Pierre Jules Mene was one of the foiemost members of the school of French 'Animalier' Sculptors which also included Rosa Bonheur and Antoine-Louis Barye. Mene produced many sculptures of animals and is remembered as one of the finest, and certainly the most prolific, animal sculptors of his time
