A fine quality pair of early 20thc patinated bronze figures of dogs. One of a Greyhound with a ball standing on a patterned carpet. The other of a Whippet with a ball, also standing on a patterned carpet. Both with incised signatures to bases 'P.J.Mene' . Both mounted on rouge marble bases.
Pierre Jules Mene was one of the foremost members of the school of French 'Animalier' Sculptors which also included Rosa Bonheur and Antoine-Louis Barye. Mene produced many sculptures of animals and is remembered as one of the finest, and certainly the most prolific, animal sculptors of his time.
