Ron Mitchell, A Pair Of Sailing Marine Oils on Canvas
Mitchell was brought up by his grandparents and encouraged to draw and paint by his Uncle James, a gifted amateur artist and sailor. He showed him pictures by a great, great uncle, the renowned marine painter William Frederick Mitchell.
Ron continued to paint throughout his teens and found a ready market for his work, portraying the ships of old in his native port of Hull. Ron also had a keen interest in the history of art and, despite leaving school with few formal qualifications, he went on to study History of Art as a mature student, attaining a first class Bachelor’s degree, a post graduate Master’s qualification and a Doctorate research qualification.
Work and family commitments prevented Ron from becoming a full time painter until around 2007 when he immediately had work accepted by Christies and Bonhams, and exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists, London.
