South African Stinkwood Side Table, Mid-20th Century
A particularly attractive South African stinkwood side or occasional table, dating to the mid-20th century, combining traditional Cape furniture influences with a compact and highly decorative form.
The table has a richly figured rectangular top with an elegant serpentine-shaped front edge, displaying the warm colour and distinctive grain associated with stinkwood. Below is a single full-width drawer, its shaped and panelled front incorporating contrasting lighter timber and fitted with a pair of original decorative brass handles.
The table is raised on four graceful cabriole legs, terminating in boldly carved claw-and-ball style feet. The shaped apron and sculptural legs give the piece a distinctly Cape/Dutch character, while its relatively restrained proportions make it particularly versatile.
The timber has developed a wonderfully warm range of honey, chestnut and deep brown tones, with the contrasting figuring across the top and drawer adding considerable visual interest.
A handsome and unusual piece of South African mid-century furniture, equally suitable as a side table, lamp table or small writing table.
Condition : In good sound condition, small wear to top that is commensurate with age.
