The Final
Sri Lanka won the 2014 ICC World Twenty tournament on 6 th April 2014 by defeating India By six wickets in the Final at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The Significance of this Final for Sri Lankan Cricket. This monumental victory ended a harrowingly painful streak of four consecutive defeats for Sri Lanka in global tournament finals (the 2007 and 2011 ODI World Cups, and the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups.
This victory was the pinnacle of a golden calendar year for Sri Lankan cricket. Led by a stellar generation of veterans and emerging stars like Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera, the team won the Asia Cup, the T20 World Cup, and a historic Test series away in England all within the same year.

Tactics for the Grand Finale: Sri Lanka vs India
Sri Lanka’s interim captain, Lasith Malinga, won the toss and elected to field first. Sri Lanka’s Master class in ‘death bowling’ heavily restricted India’s powerful batting side, yielding minimal runs in the final four overs, executing flawless tactical plan.The two Sri Lankan pace bowlers, Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara bowled wide, low full-tosses and pinpoint-yorkers outside off stump, completely denying batsmen any room to swing their arms. As a result, India scored only 19 runs off the final 24 balls. Most strikingly, Yuvraj Singh faced 21 balls, scoring just 11 runs. Dhoni was left stranded at the non-strikers end for long stretches, facing only 7 balls for his four runs. Sri Lanka comfortably chased down the target of 131 with 13 balls to spare. The legendary Kumar Sangakkara anchored the run-chase with a brilliant, unbeaten half-century earning
him the Player of the Match award.

Sri Lanka’s Path to the Final
Sri Lanka had a phenomenal run in Group 2. They bowled out Netherlands for just 39 runs, which set a record for the lowest team score in T20 World Cup history.
They also bowled out New Zealand for a meagre 60 runs later in the tournament with Sri Lanka’s left arm spinner, Rangana Herath, in one of the greatest bowling feats in cricket history, taking 5 wickets for 3 runs in a spell of 3.3 overs which included 2 maidens. Sri Lanka defeated the defending champions, the West Indies, by 27 runs (via the Duckworth-Lewis method) n a rain-interrupted semi-final to book their place in the Final
against India.

Sri Lanka’s Top Tournament Performers
While Virat Kohli dominated the tournament overall, Sri Lanka’ strength was their collective team contributions across it. The highlights are the following performances:
i. Mahela Jayawardene: He was Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer of the tournament with a total of 58, including a crucial 89 against England;
ii. Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis: They headed the Sri Lankan bowling charts with 5 wickets each, stepping up in vital moments when the team showed signs of wilting in the Group stages of the tournament
iii. Kushal Perera: He provided rapid starts at the top order, striking at 145.5 across the tournament to maximize the power-plays.
