Dimensions:
characterful early 20th-century Chinese table-top cabinet, dating to circa 1920–30, constructed in a richly coloured hardwood, possibly cherrywood, and retaining a wonderfully mellow, time-worn surface.
Of traditional rectangular form, the cabinet has a substantial projecting moulded top above a pair of recessed panelled doors, each fitted with a simple metal ring pull. The doors open to reveal a generously proportioned storage compartment, with two short drawers positioned beneath, again retaining traditional ring handles.
The timber has developed a particularly attractive russet, amber and deep red-brown patina, with areas of rubbing and wear giving the cabinet considerable depth and individuality. Traces of the deeper red finish remain particularly evident to the interior and sides, contributing to its authentic decorative character.
Raised on short stile feet, the cabinet has pleasingly robust proportions and an appealing simplicity typical of Chinese vernacular furniture. Its compact scale makes it highly versatile, equally suited for use as a table cabinet, bedside cabinet, small lamp table or decorative storage piece.
A charming and highly decorative piece whose worn surface and rich colouring are integral to its appeal and should, in our view, be preserved.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected age-related wear, marks and losses to the original surface, contributing greatly to its character and patina.
