A wonderfully characterful Indian hardwood bench, probably dating from circa 1880–1920, of substantial construction and displaying a rich, naturally aged patina. Seat Height 51.5 and Seat Depth 57 cm

The high panelled back and enclosed sides are framed by four substantial upright posts surmounted by turned finials. The back and front are decorated with an attractive arrangement of geometric panels incorporating intricately pierced fretwork, giving the piece a distinctive architectural quality.

Of particular interest is the generously proportioned hinged wooden seat, which lifts to reveal a useful storage compartment beneath. The original-style iron strap hinges and substantial hanging iron chain fittings to the front add considerably to its rustic charm and authenticity.

The bench retains a beautifully mellow surface, with warm honey-brown tones contrasting against the darker, richly patinated framework. The various signs of age, wear and historic use contribute to its individual character.

Possibly originating from Rajasthan or Gujarat in northern or western India, the bench reflects traditional Indian vernacular furniture-making, combining practical storage with decorative craftsmanship.

Both functional and highly decorative, this unusual piece would make a striking addition to a country house entrance hall, boot room, conservatory or informal sitting room. Equally suited to a contemporary interior, where its rich colour and architectural form would provide an attractive contrast.

Condition: Good antique country-house condition, with age-related wear, marks and variations in colour consistent with its character and apparent age. The hinged seat provides useful internal storage.

Origin: India, possibly Rajasthan or Gujarat.

Date: Circa 1880–1920 (provisional attribution).

Material: Hardwood with iron fittings.
