Code: 14140
Dimensions:
An unusual small table cabinet of compact proportions, probably dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1930.
Constructed in a pale hardwood, possibly beech or a related timber, and retaining a wonderfully characterful hand-applied deep red-brown coloured finish, now naturally worn and rubbed in places to reveal the lighter timber beneath.
The cabinet is enclosed by a pair of panelled doors fitted with decorative metal escutcheons. Opening to reveal a particularly appealing fitted interior comprising two small upper drawers, a larger central drawer and an open compartment below, each drawer retaining decorative metal drop fittings.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected age-related wear, marks and losses to the original surface, contributing greatly to its character and patina.
The restrained construction, red colouring and metal furniture suggest Chinese or East Asian influence and quite possibly manufacture, rather than a conventional European table cabinet. The extensive surface wear is particularly attractive, giving the cabinet a wonderfully time-softened appearance and considerable decorative character.
A highly individual small cabinet that could be used on a table or stand, as a jewellery or collector’s cabinet, or simply as a decorative object in its own right.
Probably Chinese / East Asian, early 20th century, circa 1900–1930.
Hand-coloured hardwood, possibly beech.
