Note on the Poster
Like Cocteau, Picasso, Dali and Warhol before, Bacon was asked to design a label for the latest vintage of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and although the commissions were not to be paid, they were welcomed by the artists who were rewarded with crates of rare wine.
Bacon’s first attempt was rejected as impractical – the picture is now in an Israeli Museum – but he was asked again, for the 1990 premier cru, by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and he delivered a small painting to her at the end of 1991 in a shopping bag at her hotel near Harrods.
Characteristically, Bacon said the picture was awful and he wanted to do it again.
The poignant picture shows an outstretched hand clasping a glass of wine.
The poignancy lies in the knowledge that this was probably Bacon’s last work.
The particular vintage is outstanding, having reached its perfection at the start of the 21st century.
An ideal image for an art-loving connoisseur of fine wine!
